A coyote can hear sounds from much farther away – potentially three times farther or more depending on conditions – while human hearing drops off much sooner, especially for faint noises. It is one of their key survival tools.
An air horn is an effective and harmless means of scaring a coyote away. The 121 decibel Hornet air horn, which sounds extremely loud to us, would be an even more startling sound to a coyote, yet would in no way harm them.
