Under normal use, the Hornet rechargeable air horn should not be considered a wildfire ignition source.
Unlike bear bangers, screamers, flares, or other pyrotechnic devices, the Hornet air horn produces sound using an electric motor and air compressor. It does not launch a projectile, create a spark, or contain a burning pyrotechnic charge. Therefore, it lacks the primary mechanisms by which bear bangers can ignite dry vegetation.
Several provinces and states explicitly mention that bear bangers should not be used under extreme fire conditions.
Unlike bear spray, which has an effective range of less than 25 feet (8 metres), the Hornet air horn has an effective range up to 150 feet (46 metres), which is approximately the effective range of a bear banger.
